Jenson Button has “loved” gaining weight.
The former Formula One driver has turned his attention to Hyrox fitness competitions and he is feeling better than ever after bulking up at the gym.
He told Men’s Health magazine: “I have loved putting weight on.
“It’s not been easy because I’ve been skinny my whole life.
“When I was racing, I had to weight 70kg or less. Now I’m 81kg, but I probably have less fat than I did back then.
“It’s been a really fun process, it’s taken a long time to put weight on, but I’ve enjoyed it.
“I feel so much better and more invigorated from doing weight training too.
“All the cardio sessions I used to do, I was just hanging for two days after, whereas now I feel great.”
Although he is happy with his fitness, Jenson admitted he needs to work on his lower body.
Asked the hardest aspect of Hyrox training or racing, he said: “The intensity of the EMOM (every minute on the minute) sessions.
“I find the training harder because I’m not in competition, I’m just on my own, which is mentally difficult.
“And learning compromised running was really tough. I got to train with Tim Wenisch [Hyrox world champion] in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, which was eye-opening and made me feel very small.
“But I’m all in on Hyrox – when I did my singles race, I was happy until I got to the wall balls, then it just got embarrassing.
“Ankle flexibility is my big issue, so I’m working on that and my glutes.
“Since F1, I’ve been doing a lot of upper-body work, but my legs are still a weakness.
“My wife Brittny laughs at me because I have a flat bum.”
