Xabi Alonso can bring some much-needed “stability” to Chelsea, according to Wesley Fofana.

The 25-year-old defender is excited to work with the new Chelsea boss this season, and he’s confident that Alonso can lead the Blues to success.

Speaking to the BBC, Fofana said: “I think everyone knows we need stability.

“We talked last season with the directors and they said the same thing. They think the same way as the players. We need stability.”

Fofana has endured a tough time, blighted by injuries, since making a big-money move to West London. But the defender is looking forward to the new season with optimism.

He said: “For me, some years were difficult, but now I’m back. I’m playing, I’m fit.”

Despite this, Fofana knows that soccer is a fickle business, and he could easily find himself moved on if he doesn’t perform.

Reflecting on his own situation at Chelsea, Fofana explained: “Everyone needs to be good, to train well and after the manager takes the decision. It’s like this for everyone.

“Maybe some guys will leave, others will come again. For myself, it is about training well, trying to be fit and we will see what the manager does. If the club tells me they don’t need me anymore, it is like this. Of course I will be sad but this is football. You can’t say ‘I have my place and I am sure to play’.”

Alonso was confirmed as Chelsea’s new coach in May.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder said at the time: “Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
