Jannik Sinner has played down comparisons between himself and tennis legends after extending his winning streak at ATP Masters 1000 events.

The world number one beat Elmer Moller in straight sets at the Madrid Open on Sunday (26.04.26) to continue his remarkable run in the tour’s marquee events but has dismissed suggestions that he deserves to be mentioned alongside the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Sinner – who has triumphed at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo in recent weeks – said: “I cannot compare myself with these names. They did so much stuff in their careers, I’m just at the beginning. They are at a different level.

“For me, I’m happy to be here. I’m happy to play as many matches as possible. But what they did is something else.

“I just try to give everything I have in every match. If I win, good. If not, I tried my best, and I don’t have regrets.”

The Italian ace insists that there is “no magic” behind his superb run of victories.

The four-time Grand Slam champion said: “I tried to stay calm and serve well in important moments. I think that was the key today. There was not a lot of rhythm, so I tried to stay quite compact. Let’s see what’s coming in the next round.

“I never take things for granted. I try to understand what’s working very well in certain conditions.

“This is my motivation. Trying to put myself in the best possible position to win as many matches as possible.

“There’s no magic. You always try to understand what’s working well in every practice session, and try to do the same thing in the match. I find motivation in this.”

Sinner’s hopes of claiming a first French Open title have been given a major boost by Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal from Roland Garros due to a wrist injury but he insists that the Spaniard’s absence is bad for the sport.

He said: “I think what’s most important is to say that tennis needs Carlos. Tennis is a much better sport when he’s around.”
