Jake Knapp has been working in the gym to “gain speed” on his swing.

The 32-year-old golfer is known for his powerful club movement and he’s explained driving the ball a long way involves more than just hitting it hard.

He told bunkered magazine: “I was fortunate that I was athletic when I was younger.

“I was also born with an older brother which meant I was always trying to keep up with him.

“Now, most of the stuff is done in the gym.

“I’m always making sure I’m taking care of my body and moving as efficiently as possible.

“The word I would use to describe it is ‘sequencing’.

“You see guys all the time who look like they are trying really hard and swinging it really fast and they’re a little out of control.

“When you look on the Trackman, it’s just not moving that quick.

“With me, it’s kind of the opposite.

“I’m moving more efficiently than some people are.

“A lot of it is done in the gym and getting stronger.

“For me, trying to raise my floor a little bit is important.

“Raise my baseline speed.

“If I can swing it at 129mph, that probably means I can swing it at 133mph. In turn, that means that my 129mph swing can be the normal one.

“It’s been a slow process of gaining speed over the years.”

If he hits the gym before a round, Jake wants to get energised and moving quickly.

He said: “When it comes to speed, before I go out to play, I like to do some plyometric work, some explosive stuff, to really get my heart rate up.

“I want to get my fast twitch muscle fibres going, and just my nervous system in general.

“Any sort of jumps help with that…. Anything with a jump or rotation is always good.

“Medicine ball slams, they’re good too. Anything that gets you moving quickly Is good.

“If, before a round, I just went and hit a bunch of wedges and chips and was moving slow and then someone asked me to hit a driver as hard as I could, it would be really hard to do that.

“You need to ramp up the speed.

“When you’re playing in a tournament and you walk on the tee, you need to be ready to go.

“So, in the gym before a round, there’s a lot of stretching and a lot of mobility exercises and stuff.

“As the warm-up goes on, it gets into moving some heavy weights, just to get that nervous system firing.

“Some jumps, some throws, and other things to really get my body moving faster.”
