Billy Twelvetrees is still “haunted” by a missed kick.
The 37-year-old centre/fly-half – who now plays for the Worcester Warriors – “didn’t think anything would go wrong when he stepped up for a penalty that would have seen his side the Leicester Tigers beat Saracens, but they ultimately lost 14-15, ending an impressive streak at home.
Asked his most embarrassing moment, he told Rugby World magazine: “Oh God, this still haunts me.
“I missed a kick to beat Saracens in 2011 and we hadn’t lost at Welford Road for three years.
“We got a penalty with the last play; I was a really competent ten and didn’t even think about missing. I hit it and missed.
“The crowd gasped and there was this dead silence.
“I walked through the club and no one looked at me. It was like that shame scene from Game of Thrones.”
Billy always plays in the same boots, but had to “stockpile” the studs for them after they stopped being produced.
He said: “The only consistent [superstition] is that I’ve worn the same boots for the last five years.
“I’ve only ever played in them, never trained.
“They don’t make the studs anymore, so I stockpiled a load of studs a couple of years ago which I will have to dig out of the tool shed somewhere.”
