Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that this season will “probably” be his last as a player.
The Portuguese football legend, 41, has revealed that he wants to leave a “spectacular legacy” as he contemplates a family-orientated future after marrying his partner Georgina Rodriguez last week.
Ronaldo, who plies his trade at Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, told Vogue: “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.
“I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.
“Have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned – what we’ve earned.
“Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.”
Ronaldo is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time and has won both the Ballon d’Or award and Champions League on five occasions.
He has won league titles in England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia and is the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s international football with 146 goals in 233 appearances.
Ronaldo is only 24 goals away from scoring 1,000 career goals.
The former Real Madrid forward was unable to lift the World Cup with Portugal but explained that he departed the global stage with a “clear conscience” when his side were knocked out by eventual winners Spain at this summer’s tournament in North America – although he refused to confirm if it would be the end of his international career.
Ronaldo, the only man to score at six World Cups, said: “I am sad to leave like this but I have given everything, always given my best.
“I go with a clear conscience. This is football, it is the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. You have to carry on. It was my last World Cup, yes, but as far as the rest of it is concerned: there will be time to think, to be with my family, [I will] not make decisions in the heat of the moment.”
