Christian Pulisic is in a “much better” condition than when he came off against Paraguay.,
The 27-year-old winger was taken off at half time in USA’s opening World Cup game after taking a kick to the back of the leg, and while he has been making a “massive effort” to be available for Friday’s (19.06.26) game against Australia, coach Mauricio Pochettino revealed they will wait to make a decision on his fitness.
He said: “He’s evolving… we will see. If he is not available for tomorrow he’ll be available for the next game [against Turkey on June 25]. He’s doing a massive effort to be available.
“For a player that loves their country it’s a massive opportunity to play and win games. So when this happens it’s painful but Christian is strong with a great mentality.. he’s doing his best to be ready as soon as possible.”
Christian has been on a “modified” individual training schedule over the last few days, and the coach wants to speak with the medical team before deciding whether or not he should play.
Pochettino said: “He was training in an individual way all week but like always, tonight, the day before the game, we have a meeting with the medical team.
“We will assess the whole group, the players, and tomorrow we will communicate what we agree.”
The captain’s teammates have expressed their hope that he will play.
Midfielder Brenden Aaronson said: “Hopefully, Christian is going to be ready for the game. He’s a big player to us.”
Weston McKennie added: “I’m more just the energy guy, you know, either way, just trying to get good spirits and hopefully [Pulisic] can be there tomorrow.
“I know he really wants to be and he’s doing everything that he can and the staff is doing everything that they can as well.”
