Casemiro was “very emotional” when he said goodbye to Manchester United.

The club have released a farewell documentary in which the Brazilian midfielder – who had long voiced his intention to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires this summer – broke down in tears ahead of his final home game against Nottingham Forest, during which he received a standing ovation when being substituted, as he sent a message of gratitude to fans.

Asked how he was feeling before the game, Casemiro sobbed as he thanked fans for the four “unbelievable” years he had enjoyed at the club.

He said: “I need to say thank you because it was four unbelievable years. I love this club, the fans, the people. Thank you so much.

“It’s very special and emotional for me. I finish in this moment, but it’s very emotional.”

The 34-year-old sportsman’s wife, Anna Casemiro, also admitted in the film it had been a “difficult” decision to leave, particularly in the face of so much love from fans, who had frequently chanted “One more year” to the player during games.

She said: “As a family, we talked a lot and had to make this difficult decision.

“But I think it feels like the end of a very beautiful chapter, as I told Casemiro and our family.

“I think everything about this moment has been beautiful, right?

“His chant feels like a declaration of love for him. For us, there’s an emptiness in leaving. The love we are receiving through that song means so much.”

After the World Cup, Casemiro is expected to move to MLS side Inter Miami on a free transfer, having agreed a two-year contract with the option of a third year.

However, LA Galaxy are seeking compensation for their discovery rights after being the MLS franchise which first instigated contact with the Brazilian.
