Joe Cordina hopes to “tick off another box” in America next month.
The 34-year-old boxer Is hoping to become Wales’ second two-weight world champion after Joe Calzaghe when he faces Abdullah Mason at Cleveland’s Wolstein Centre and he’s excited to get in the ring across the pond.
He told Boxing News magazine: “It’s always been a goal of mine to fight for a world title in America.
“To fight a future great in Abdullah Mason in America is a big thing for me. I’m happy, it ticks off another box that I’ve set.”
Joe is very content with the balance he has found in his work and career.
He said: “Nothing in my mindset has changed, it’s just how I’m feeling mentally.
“I was in Sheffield [with Team GB] for seven-and-a-half years, then in Essex for nine years.
“To be home now, it’s a nice feeling.
“I’m not missing out like I’ve done in the past. I still have to sacrifice certain things – but birthdays, events, I can still pop out to these places.
“Sacrifice keeps you hungry – it’s the main thing in boxing.”
But he knows the stakes are high for the fight against Mason.
He said: “If this fight was just presented to me, I’d say it was a bit of a gamble and an opportunity.
“How am I gonna get another world title? If I lose, it’s curtains.
“But I’ve earned my way back. I’m on my journey to become a three-time, two-weight world champion.”
