Roberto De Zerbi is determined to take Tottenham “to the top of the Premier League”.

The Italian coach has been tasked with overseeing a rebuild at Spurs after they narrowly avoided relegation last season and has declared that his ultimate goal is to get the club competing at the sharp end.

Asked for his target at Tottenham, De Zerbi told TNT Sports: “To bring the club – not alone, but together with the players, the board, everyone who works inside Tottenham – to the top of the Premier League.

“Obviously, it’s very tough to win the trophy. But we are Tottenham, and we have to arrive at the right moment to fight, to compete, to win the trophy – because the history of this club, the potential of our owner and our board, is very high.”

However, De Zerbi admits that Spurs fans may have to be patient following a difficult couple of years domestically.

He said: “In football, you have to be humble and keep your eyes on your plan. Our project is not just about this season.

“This is the first season; in the first season, you have to build the base and the conditions to go for a long time and create something important. I think in the Premier League there are many, many clubs higher than our level at this moment.”

Spurs have spent over £200 million on new signings so far this summer and De Zerbi says that the mood at the club is unrecognisable compared to when he arrived in March with the team’s Premier League status under threat.

The manager said: “The four months were very tough, especially the first two.

“But it was very, very nice at the end because we stayed up, and I think we reached a big target. But now it’s totally different to last season. We’re building a new team, a new group of players. We’re starting a new project, a new plan, with energy, with enthusiasm, a better situation, a better atmosphere.”
