Jose Mourinho has described his return to Real Madrid as “coming home”.
The Portuguese coach was formally unveiled for his second spell at Los Blancos on Tuesday (18.08.26) and says that he feels more “emotional” than when he first took charge of the La Liga giants.
Mourinho, who previously managed Real from 2010 to 2013, told the club’s TV channel: “This is coming home. Emotionally, it’s even better than the first time because back then it was a feeling of reaching the very top of the world, whereas now it’s more emotional and heartfelt.
“I’m one of you; I always have been. You can imagine what it means to me to work for Real Madrid.”
The Special One returns to Real after the club have endured two seasons without a trophy win and he explained that he is focused on raising standards at the club instead of boosting his own coaching legacy.
Mourinho said: “Words aren’t enough… because it’s like a mission.
“I’m here to help everyone be better: players, staff… To create a culture of hard work, responsibility, ambition and something I know well, which is the responsibility and honour of working for Real Madrid.”
Mourinho’s first spell at Real ended amid dressing room tensions but he has been impressed with the attitude of the current squad.
The manager said: “I’ve found a dressing room with a lot of will to win. I’ve found an open dressing room, with common sense. From the first day, I haven’t had any chance to be an aggressive leader – which I can be – because they’ve protected me from that version [of myself]. Their behaviour has been beyond reproach.”
Real have signed six players so far this summer but Mourinho denied claims that he wants more additions to his squad before the window shuts on September 1.
He said: “I won’t say there won’t be more [signings], the market is open, but if you ask me if the squad is closed, yes. I like the squad.”
