Michael Cheika has “no idea” what he’ll be doing come next year’s rugby World cup.
The 59-year-old former Australia and Argentina coach – who is currently on a one-year deal as assistant coach of the Sydney Roosters – isn’t too concerned about his future in the sport at the moment because he knows it will work out for the best.
He told the Irish Examiner he has “no idea” about what he’ll be doing during the world Cup and added: “Sometimes I love being in that zone. You don’t know what’s going to happen next and you just let it play out.
“Again, I’m in charge of doing the best I can right now. If I do that, everything else is going to work out from there. No matter how I end up watching it.”
And despite frustration down under that neither Michael nore respected assistant coach Scott Wisemantel are currently working in the 15-person game, he insisted he doesn’t feel the game “owes” him anything.
He said: “There’s nothing I can do about that, mate. I certainly don’t feel like there’s nothing owed or I should get something. This is the nature of the game.
“For us guys who are doing that, it’s just a different experience that we’re trying to do our best in. I don’t know why that’s happened. It is just how it is. I don’t think there’s a deeper theme there, you know what I mean?
“I don’t think someone’s evilly scheming to try to keep you out of a game, it’s just the way it’s turned out.”
And he is confident about Australia’s World Cup chances.
He said: “Put it this way, it’s as good a talent base, I think, that we’ve had for a long time.
“I just think from what I’ve seen, there’s a good talent base there. Given the environment, Les is coming in now, he’ll do his thing. But there is time, I have no doubt about it.
“I think that self-confidence and self-belief is really important. When you feel that, the game becomes different. You might be doing exactly the same things, but the game becomes different.”
