Sam Eggington only ever thought he’d be a “journeyman” fighter.
The 32-year-old boxer hung up his gloves in May after a career that saw him hold the IBO super-welterweight title and the British, Commonwealth and European welterweight titles and he admitted all his accomplishments were just a “bonus”.
He told Boxing News magazine: “Everything was a bonus.
“I turned pro to be a journeyman. To be Midlands champion was unbelievable.
“I don’t follow boxing, so I didn’t really understand the magnitude of what I was doing. I was just doing my job. I get to win a belt? Great. And I get more money? Great.”
For two years in a row, Sam was honoured by the British Board of Control for Fight of the Year, against Ted Cheeseman in 2020 and Bilel Jkitou in 2021.
But Sam admitted his loss to Cheeseman, a close but unanimous decision, is the only one he feels bitter about.
He said: “I genuinely thought I won that fight.
“The commentators had me losing the first six rounds and that was crazy.
“I would have paid him myself to get the rematch.”
And the former sportsman doesn’t miss the business side of boxing.
He said: “It’s a dog’s game. It’s very fake.
“People pretend to be your friend, but they just want you to have wars and make them money.”
