Jeff Bezos is reportedly nearing a deal to buy a stake in Liverpool FC.
The Amazon founder is said to be closing in on an agreement to buy around a one third stake in the Premier League club, as part of a consortium led by steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal’s son-in-law Amit Bhatia.
As reported by Sky News, an announcement from Fenway Sports Group, who have been the club’s controlling shareholder since 2010, could come as soon as this week.
While the consortium is being led by Bhatia – who was recently a shareholder in Queens Park Rangers – Bezos will be involved alongside Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
While an announcement is expected in the coming days, an insider noted it could be pushed back to next week.
It’s reported that the wealthy trio’s investment in Liverpool will value the club at £4.4 billion.
Last month, a spokesperson for FSG said: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
No further comment has been made.
Meahwhile, last week Bradley Barcola emerged as Liverpool’s leading attacking target as the Reds prepare a blockbuster move for the Paris Saint-Germain winger after receiving encouragement that the France international is open to a switch to Anfield.
Liverpool are stepping up plans to strengthen their forward line before the new season, with the club readying an offer for Barcola, 23, after discussions with his representatives indicated he would welcome the opportunity to work under head coach Andoni Iraola.
According to reports, Paris Saint-Germain are expected to demand well in excess of £110 million for the winger, using the £117 million Chelsea paid Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers as a benchmark for his valuation.
Sources in France have also suggested PSG could seek as much as £145 million for the player, who is understood to be unwilling to sign a new contract with the French champions.
Liverpool have yet to indicate whether they would meet a fee that would set a new Premier League transfer record.
