Hossam Hassan has vowed not to watch any more of the World Cup because he feels Egypt “suffered an injustice” against Argentina.
The manager’s side were winning 2-0, only for their opponents to make a comeback and end the game 3-2 up following Enzo Fernandez’s winning goal in the last minutes, and Hassan has revealed Egypt had objected to the selection of French referee Francois Letexier before the game.
But as well as being upset that Letexier failed to award a foul seconds before Fernandez’s winner, Hassan was furious with Fifa, who he felt were determined to keep the reigning champions in the tournament for as long as possible.
He fumed: “It’s all about money. They want Messi to stay in the tournament.
“In football, many things happen off the pitch because of interests. What happened was unfair. Egypt deserved to qualify. We were the better team.
“Why isn’t there any fairness in sport? I do not want to try to put it nicely here with beautiful wording. We have been treated unfairly today. We have suffered injustice.
“It is my own way of speaking up and standing up. I am not going to watch another match in this tournament.”
Winger Mostafa Ziko also accused officials of favouring Argentina.
He said: “After we made it 2-0, everything went against us. I don’t know why this second goal was disallowed.”
Meanwhile, Lionel Scaloni had to cut short his post-match interview after bursting into tears while paying tribute to Lionel Messi.
He said: “Messi missed a penalty but he asks for the ball again and he drives, again and again.
“I get goosebumps, to be honest. This is who we are, as Argentinians. We play our hearts out.”
