Novak Djokovic has revealed that he could continue playing tennis for “another 15 years”.

The 39-year-old tennis legend has explained that he sees himself on court for a long time to come if he maintains his “passion” for the sport.

Speaking in the Amazon Prime Video documentary Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter, he said: “I truly feel still young. I don’t know when I’m going to finish my career.

“It might be another year, it might be another 15 years, I don’t know. As long as I have the drive, the passion, but most of all, as long as I feel like I can win tournaments and I can be one of the best players in the world, I want to keep going.”

Djokovic explained that he is constantly trying to prove himself, despite all that he has achieved during his career.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner said: “The number one doubter is here (pointing to himself). I’m the number one doubter, and I’m trying to prove myself wrong more than anyone else.”

Djokovic is also puzzled as to why there is so much speculation about when he will bring his career to an end.

The world number five said: “I have no date in my mind, to be honest, the expiry date of my career.

“I know a lot of people are speculating that, a lot of people are retiring me already for many years. Why would you want to retire me when I’m still playing and I’m still competing at the highest level? I’m still top five, top 10 in the world. Why would I talk about retirement when I keep proving to myself that I can still win?”

Djokovic’s wife Jelena has no idea when the Serbian ace will retire but did note that it is increasingly difficult for her husband to leave their two children – son Stefan, 11, and daughter Tara, eight – behind when he travels the world to compete.

She said: “Everybody is asking him, ‘When are you going to retire?’ And all of that. He definitely has mixed feelings about his retirement. This is the biggest decision of his life.

“One side of him is excited because there is so much to do in this world, and then there is, ‘Hey, but I love what I’ve achieved, I feel like I can push longer, should I, because this might not be the best thing for my family?’”
