Emma Raducanu has been ruled out of the US Open as she continues her recovery from a stress fracture.
The British tennis star sustained the right lower leg injury earlier this summer – forcing her to miss Wimbledon – and will now sit out the event that she famously won in 2021.
The decision is believed to have been made following Raducanu’s latest consultations with her medical team as she had only recently returned to the court wearing a protective boot.
It continues yet another injury-disrupted year for Raducanu as she spent over two months off court with a post-viral illness after falling unwell in February.
The world number 49 later reunited with coach Andrew Richardson – who guided her to US Open glory – and enjoyed a memorable week when she reached the final at Queen’s in June, although she hasn’t played since due to the injury.
After withdrawing from Wimbledon, Raducanu stressed that she was striving to do her “best every day” despite the fitness issues that have ravaged her season.
She said: “It’s difficult waking up each day, not knowing how it’s going to be. Not knowing whether you’re in or out causes a lot of uncertainty. All I can do is my best every day. That’s what I’m doing, whether that’s the treatments, whether that’s the practice.
“I know I’m putting everything I possibly can into each day. With the people around me, they’re pushing me in the right way. Keeping morale and spirits high is important as well. Even if you’re going through a difficult time, I think allowing yourself to have moments of joy when they do come through is important.”
