Jordan Pickford loves the “pressure” of playing in goal for England.

The 32-year-old keeper is gearing up for his third World Cup between the sticks for his country and he has no problem with carrying the weight of expectation on his shoulders because he “thrives” when the stakes are high.

He told FourFourTwo magazine: “The pressure is on every time you wear an England shirt, but there’s nothing better. I thrive off the pressure.

“There’s no better feeling than going to a World Cup, walking out before a game, seeing all the England fans there and knowing the whole world is watching.

“Everyone’s different, and people deal with things in different ways, so I can only speak for myself, but I love the pressure.”

Jordan believes England are one of the “best teams” in this year’s tournament and so thinks it is important to not let the “moments of difficulty” derail the entire campaign.

Asked if he agrees there is no obvious favourite this year, he said: “That makes it even more important that we’re prepared as best as we can be and at our best in each match,.

“We have to be prepared better than anyone else, then hit our peak at the right time.

“To win the competition, you know you’re going to face moments of difficulty, so how we overcome those moments will define what we achieve.

“It won’t be plain sailing.

“It’s going to be about how you navigate it.

“If you look through history, the South American sides and Europe’s best teams tend to be there or thereabouts, and I don’t think that’ll change.

“I genuinely think we’re one of the best teams – how we get on is up to whether or not we can put out the best version of ourselves.”
