Novak Djokovic has a “desire” to defend his Olympic title in 2028.
The Serbian tennis legend will be 41 by the time the event in Los Angeles comes round but he hopes to get the opportunity to add to the gold medal he won in Paris two years ago, even though he did acknowledge that it is still “far away”.
Speaking to Corriere TV at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Djokovic said: “Far away, yes. At this stage of my life and career, it’s far off, but obviously I have the desire to get there.”
The 24-time Grand Slam winner recently revealed that he wished to compete in LA after his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open final earlier this month.
Djokovic said: “God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six or 12 months, so it has been a great ride – I love you guys.
“That’s why I left it open. I really don’t know. You’ve followed me for a long time and I don’t pretend or fake things. I told you for the last year or year and a half that I’m not sure how much and what is next.
“I said I’d like to play until the 2028 Olympics, but that might mean playing one tournament a year, maybe 10, 15, two, or seven— I honestly don’t know.
“I don’t want to make decisions about my schedule and future so far in advance. Right now, my only wish is to be with my family and then I’ll see what’s next.”
Djokovic, 38, revealed last year that he hoped to keep playing tennis into his 40s after being inspired by the longevity of sporting icons such as footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and basketball great LeBron James.
The world number three said: “Longevity is one of my biggest motivations.
“I really want to see how far I can go. If you see across all the global sports, LeBron James he is still going strong, he is 40, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Brady played until he was 40-something years old, it is unbelievable.
“They are inspiring me.”
