Eddie Hearn has announced Matchroom Boxing will be heading to Accra, Ghana.

The 46-year-old promoter has confirmed his company will be going to West Africa for its next show on December 20 – though Hearn insisted it would not be headlined by Anthony Joshua, 36.

Speaking with Ring Magazine, Hearn said: “We’re doing a show in Ghana on December 20th. Obviously, this will not be an AJ show, but it’s still going to be a good show.”

Hearn added the show wouldn’t definitely be “a precursor for an AJ show”, and said Matchroom was going to Accra to “get the lay of the land”.

He explained: “The idea is that this is probably a precursor for an AJ show out there, but it’s not part of our initial deal. We can just get the lay of the land with this one.

“Frank [Smith] went out there for a site visit and was impressed by what he saw. This deal is with the same people.”

Joshua has been out of the ring recovering from an elbow surgery after he sustained an injury during his fight with Daniel Dubois, 28, in September 2024.

Hearn has recently confirmed AJ is looking to return to boxing in 2026, though teased there was a “small chance” he could fight again before the end of the year.

He told Sky Sports: “If he fights this year, that will be a pure run out. It won’t be a top 15 guy. “

Hearn is hoping to set up a fight between Joshua and former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, 37, and the promoter has explained AJ will use his first debut fight to prepare for The Gypsy King.

He said: “He’s either going to have those two fights before Tyson Fury, if that can get made, or he’s going to have the one fight in February. We haven’t really decided yet but he’s keen to get active.”

The plan’s very important. The most important thing is making sure he’s 110 per cent confident and ready to beat Tyson Fury.

“We need to be able to plan that for AJ to make sure that he’s in the best place possible for what will be the biggest moment of his career, I believe.”
