Boris Becker believes Novak Djokovic will retire after the 2028 Olympics.

The German tennis legend coached the former world number one from 2013 and 2016 and though he thinks the 39-year-old sportsman is still more than capable of winning tournaments, he fears he is getting bored and his resulting lack of games could lead to his downfall.

Writing for Telegraph Sport, Boris said: “As for how long he will carry on, my money is on the 2028 Olympics in LA. The only problem is that the regular tour has come to bore him. If you’ve won 24 majors, what’s your motivation for fitting in another Miami Open? As a result, he is sometimes in danger of not playing enough.

“Four matches between Melbourne and Paris this year was on the light side, even for such a great champion.

“The danger is that, because Novak has so many other interests, sometimes they take him away a little bit from tennis. He will really need to discipline himself to make it to LA ’28. But I’m hoping – for the sport’s sake – that he gets there.”

Boris can see a lot of similarities between Djokovic and current world number one Jannik Sinner.

He said: “I see a lot of comparisons between Sinner and Novak. They are both very calculating players, whereas Carlos Alcaraz has the soul of an artist.

“Like Roger Federer, Alcaraz wants to create a painting on the court.

“I’ve spoken about the importance of the game plan for Novak, but the worst thing you could do with either Federer or Alcaraz is to give them any kind of game plan. They want to go out there and improvise, to play creative and free.”
