Alessia Russo insists that women’s football still “values” the supporters.

The growing popularity of the women’s game means that it has become harder for players to maintain a close connection with fans but the England striker says it is a bond that won’t be lost.

In a joint interview with England rugby star Jess Breach, Russo told Telegraph Sport: “We want to stay out and see as many of the fans as we can, but sometimes it is just hard.

“We do what we can and try our best but it’s just tough sometimes. But like Jess said, they’re so important, they’ve been there since the start. A few years ago it was possible to go around pretty much everyone and give them whatever they needed but sometimes it just isn’t possible. But that doesn’t mean we don’t care or don’t value them, because we do.”

Both England’s football and rugby teams enjoyed success this year as Euro 2025 winner Russo and her team-mates were watching the Red Roses claim glory at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in September.

The Arsenal star said: “The sisterhood element is really important.

“That’s what’s so powerful about women’s sport – we get on board together and try to take the game to places it’s never been before.

“When we were watching the Red Roses at the World Cup, we were all their biggest fans and we talk about them now. Sarina (Wiegman, England manager) was talking about how we were all buzzing to have some of them at our game at Wembley recently.

“What they’ve done for rugby is similar to what we did for football, they’ve changed the game massively and will continue to do so. It shouldn’t always take winning a trophy but it proves that the talent and ability is there and now they can take the game to a new height.”
