Enzo Fernandez’s hopes of securing a move to Real Madrid have suffered a significant setback after the Spanish club issued an unusually firm public statement denying it has any intention of signing the Chelsea midfielder this summer.
The announcement comes despite sustained speculation linking the Argentina international with a move to the Bernabéu following Chelsea’s failure to qualify for Europe last season, and leaves him facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder remains one of Chelsea’s highest-profile players after helping Argentina win the 2022 World Cup and later lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with the London club.
Real Madrid released the statement on Friday (03.07.26) after reports in Spain and England suggested the 15-time European champions were considering a move for Enzo.
Chelsea have confirmed they have received no formal approach from the Spanish club and continue to value the midfielder at around £120 million should a serious bid emerge.
The Premier League side are not actively looking to sell and would be prepared to keep Enzo as a key figure under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
The situation follows months of speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future after comments made by Enzo earlier this year expressing admiration for Madrid resulted in disciplinary action.
Real, meanwhile, have already completed the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer and insist there has been no contact regarding Enzo.
Real Madrid said: “In light of the reports and statements that have appeared in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid in the player Enzo Fernandez, the club wishes to state that it has not made any effort, either direct or indirect, to sign the aforementioned player and, likewise, has no intention of undertaking such an operation.”
The club added it “wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernandez, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely known, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship”.
It added: “Precisely because of the respect that an entity like Chelsea FC deserves and because of the principles of institutional loyalty that have always governed the actions of Real Madrid, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny speculations that are unfounded and do not correspond to reality.
“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the lack of any action on the part of the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and that only contributes to generating confusion among fans and unnecessarily harming the entities and people involved.”
Enzo joined Chelsea from Benfica in February 2023 for a then-British record fee of £107 million shortly after starring in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in Qatar.
Since arriving in west London, he has established himself as one of the club’s most influential midfielders, contributing 15 goals and seven assists in all competitions last season while also serving as vice-captain.
The speculation over his future intensified after Chelsea’s disappointing domestic campaign and Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain.
Former Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior suspended Enzo for two matches in April after the midfielder said he did not know whether he would remain at the club beyond the season and admitted he would “love” to live in Madrid.
Real’s statement also mirrors a similar intervention made last month when the club publicly denied reports linking it with Bayern Munich winger Michael Elise following his impressive performances for France at the World Cup.
Chelsea maintain they have not attempted to force Enzo out of the club.
The Blues remain open to offers only if their valuation is met but continue to believe the midfielder can play a central role under Alonso.
Club officials are also understood to believe strong performances on the pitch can help repair Enzo’s relationship with supporters following the uncertainty surrounding his future.
The Argentina international continues to feature for his country at this summer’s World Cup while Chelsea insist no discussions with Real Madrid have taken place regarding a transfer.
