Casemiro thinks that Michael Carrick “deserves” to become Manchester United’s permanent manager.

The Brazilian midfielder – who will leave Old Trafford when his contract expires this summer – has been in excellent form since Carrick took charge on an interim basis in January and thinks that the impressive results the coach has overseen warrant a long-term stint in the dugout.

Casemiro told the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel: “He deserves to stay. The team plays very good. He will win many games. The team improves day by day. Game by game the team improves.

“So for me it’s a big problem because in my opinion he deserved this opportunity. So, especially for me, because he played in the midfield, he talked with me as a midfielder to a midfielder, it’s easier. But for me, he deserved the opportunity because the team is very comfortable. The team plays very good. We have big wins. So for me he deserved this opportunity.”

Casemiro feels that Carrick’s experience at United makes him the ideal candidate for the job, pointing out how the ex-Red Devils midfielder informed the players of the importance of the club’s recent game against rivals Leeds.

The five-time Champions League winner said: “He’s very intelligent. But for me, the best thing he knows about the club. He understands the club. I remember we played against Leeds, and the meeting is about the history of this game…But not everyone knows about Leeds.”

Casemiro will make his final appearance at Old Trafford when United take on Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this weekend and admits that it will be hard to avoid the tears as he prepares to say farewell to the supporters.

The former Real Madrid ace told United’s website: “Well, honestly I feel so happy, especially for the affection from the fans, and the respect they have for me.

“So, it’s just gratitude for this love, it is so exciting.

“I am hoping not to cry on my last day, as it is such a beautiful experience. My wife already cried, the other day, when the fans were asking for one more year.

“So, I just want to enjoy it, enjoy all the moments and I will be a United fan for the rest of my life.”
