Andy Murray will be part of Jack Draper’s coaching team at Wimbledon.
The former world number one will link up with his compatriot for the grass-court season this summer in what will be his first role in the sport since leaving former rival Novak Djokovic’s coaching set-up last year.
Draper – who recently announced that he was splitting with coach Jamie Delgado – said: “I am very grateful for everything Jamie Delgado has done for me over these past six months. He is a world-class coach and a great man.
“In the interim, I will continue to be supported by the excellent team at the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association), with the addition of Andy Murray, who will be supporting me throughout the grass court season.”
Draper has suffered an injury-hit year so far and has slipped down the world rankings following his decision to withdraw from the upcoming French Open with a knee problem, although he will hope that teaming up with Murray can inspire a change of fortunes at SW19.
Murray recently suggested that he was open to coaching again, even though he was focused on spending time with his family at present.
The three-time Grand Slam champion joked in an interview with Sky Sports:”Djokovic probably learned nothing [from me]. No, I learned a lot and honestly, I would coach again but probably not right now.
“I’ve had a few opportunities to coach but I don’t really want to do loads of travelling right now unless it’s with my family.”
Murray revealed that it was an eye-opening experience working at close quarters with Djokovic and even explained how fatherhood helped him in terms of getting his message across.
The two-time Wimbledon champion said: “I knew lots about Novak’s game. I played against him for years and studied his game. It was interesting to see what his day-to-day looked like in comparison to what I might have been doing and how those things differ.
“From a coaching perspective it’s about how you communicate your message to the player that you’re working with and how to listen to them. I really think that having kids has helped me with that – learning to be more understanding and seeing something from another person’s point of view and perspective.
“But I felt I learned that a bit from coaching in how to work in a team. When you’re the focal point as a player, all the team are working for you, whereas when you’re part of a coaching team, you’re a small part of that trying to help an individual do the best they can.”
