Wessel Nijman isn’t bothered about breaking records despite his win over Max Hopp.

The 25-year-old darts star has become the first player since fellow Dutchman Michael van Gerwen’s 2016 triumph to win five Players Championship titles in a year, but he has insisted he’s focused on the future.

He said: “I’m just happy with the way I’m playing. I played well today, especially in the later stages of the tournament.

“I’m feeling pretty confident in these floor events, and I hope I can play like this on the floor for many more years.

“I don’t really care about records, I care more about the form that I’m playing right now.

“It’s always good to have those kinds of records in your bag, but it doesn’t give you much more than the form you’re in.

“I just want to be in the top 16 and make as many steps as close to number one as possible by the end of the year.”

He secured the £15,000 top prize for the fifth time in just 12 appearances.

The Players Championship has 34 events across the year, with the finals being held in Minehead in November.

While Nijman is having a successful run, Van German is still looking for hirs first PDC ProTour win of the season.

He crashed out of the Players Championship 14 in the third round, after losing 6-4 to Austria’s Mensur Suljovic.

Elsewhere, Lewis Pride scored a major upset over two-time world champion Gary Anderson in the first round.

Some of the top players like Luke Littler and Luke Humphries have opted to skip the event.
