Lucy Bronze thinks strapping her own leg during England’s Euro 2025 game against Sweden “sums up women’s sport”.

The 33-year-old right back was amazed when footage of her tending to her limb during the game went viral because she admitted she and many other sportswomen are used to having to carry out such procedures themselves.

She told Telegraph Sport: “I didn’t expect it to be a big deal at all.

“I scored a goal in that game and scored a penalty and everyone wanted to talk about me taping my leg up! I thought, ‘Is that what I’ve got to do for people to talk about me?’

“It was so funny talking to Jill Scott; she used to tape her own ankles every single England game. The England rugby girls, when I spoke to them, they were like, ‘Yeah, we tape up ourselves most games’.

“I think it’s quite normal in women’s sport, you have to become quite self-sufficient and if someone isn’t there, you just learn to do things yourself. I know it was a bit of a meme but it kind of just sums up women’s sport in general. If no one is there, I’ll do it myself.”

Lucy – who revealed after England had won the tournament that she had been playing with a broken leg throughout – takes her “responsibility” to the women’s game very seriously and is keen to do whatever she can to further the sport.

She said: “Every morning I’m training but I go home and there’s something else I can do to help the game.

“Women’s football and women’s sport is so ripe right now in people’s minds, I want to make sure that we get extra funding from the Government or we speak to brands at events or being part of the Ballon d’Or, making sure women are represented in those spaces.

“I know that I have a responsibility and I’m happy to fulfil that.”
