The summer football transfer window has closed with a flurry of deals across Europe – though several collapsed at the last moment.

Liverpool made the biggest splash by signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record £130 million.

The Sweden international has signed a long-term deal at Anfield and will wear the No 9 shirt.

Liverpool had also agreed a £35 million fee with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi, but that move fell through after Palace were unable to secure a replacement.

Tottenham Hotspur completed the loan signing of Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain for the season, while Newcastle responded to losing Isak by finalising a £55 million deal for Yoane Wissa from Brentford.

Sources indicated to The Sun the paperwork was only completed 30 seconds before the deadline, with Wissa set to wear the No 9 shirt for Newcastle.

Manchester City confirmed the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain for £26 million.

The Italy goalkeeper has signed a five-year deal, with the option of a further year.

His arrival followed the departure of Ederson, who joined Fenerbahce for £11 million after eight years at the Etihad Stadium.

Manuel Akanji also departed City, moving to Inter Milan on loan with a view to a £13 million permanent transfer next summer.

Inter paid £870,000 to take the Switzerland defender for the season.

City’s captain, Ilkay Gundogan, is in talks with Galatasaray, which could see another of Pep Guardiola’s Champions League-winning side depart.

Elsewhere, Nayef Aguerd, left West Ham United for Marseille after spending last season on loan at Real Sociedad.

Nottingham Forest’s Jota Silva came within one minute of sealing a move to Sporting Lisbon, but paperwork submitted past midnight meant the deal could not be registered.

The forward remains at Forest, though moves to Turkey or the Netherlands remain possible with those transfer windows still open.

By the close of business, the window had seen record sums spent, and a number of deals left hanging by the finest of margins.
