Olivier Giroud thinks Kylian Mbappe is the “perfect fit” for France captain.

The 27-year-old striker has succeeded Hugo Lloris as captain of his country and while manager Didier Deschamps’ choice has been controversial, his former teammate thinks the right man has got the job.

Olivier told FourFourTwo magazine: “Some people have written things about him and called him arrogant, but I completely disagree.

“It’s just confidence. He believes in himself and he shows it on the pitch.

“He has a strong personality. People always try to find the negative or make a big story out of things, but he has broad shoulders.

“He has the personality to carry those expectations and nothing means more to him than the national team. He’s a perfect fit for captain.”

Olivier is excited to see Mbappe line up alongside Ousmane Dembele on France’s front line during the World Cup.

He said: “People talk about having multiple stars in a team and ask if they can work together but listen, it’s a brilliant thing to have in a national team.

“It’s also important to know that Ousmane and Kylian are very close – they love each other like brothers and they’re both great guys as well.

“The amount of strikers that we have and the level of talent in that dressing room is fantastic.

“The offensive talent France possesses is special.

“They can both lead the team this summer and, if we play to the level I know we can, and defend well on top of that, there’s no reason why we can’t go all the way with players like those two.”
