Novak Djokovic is determined to carry on playing tennis into his 40s.
The 38-year-old tennis legend made the semi-finals at all four of the Grand Slam tournaments this year and has vowed to keep playing for the foreseeable future as he seeks a record-breaking 25th major title by taking inspiration from the longevity of sporting icons such as footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and basketball ace LeBron James.
Djokovic, whose Grand Slam hopes over the past two years have been scuppered by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, said at the Joy Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: “Longevity is one of my biggest motivations.
“I really want to see how far I can go. If you see across all the global sports, LeBron James he is still going strong, he is 40, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Brady played until he was 40-something years old, it is unbelievable.
“They are inspiring me.
“In the next couple of years tennis is a sport that can be greatly transformed and I want to be part of that change.
“I want to be playing when we rejuvenate our sport and set the new platform that is going to go on for decades to come.”
Djokovic co-founded the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) in 2020 and hopes to still be playing when the changes that the body have pushed for are implemented.
The former world number one said: “I want to also live to see – live meaning keep on playing professionally – what is coming for our sport, and I am super excited about it.
“These are things I can’t be openly speaking about at the moment, but in the next couple of years, I feel like tennis is a sport that can be greatly transformed, and I want to be part of that change.”
