Missy Bo Kearns thinks moving to Aston Villa was the “best thing” for her career.

The midfielder left her local club Liverpool to join their Women’s Super League rivals Villa in 2024 and admits that the “emotionally” tough choice was necessary for her development as a player.

Kearns told MATCH magazine: “It was obviously a tough decision emotionally. But, at the end of the day, football’s a short career, and you’ve got to make the most of it.

“I think this was the best thing for me, and you’ve got to do what’s best for you!”

Despite leaving Liverpool, Kearns is proud of everything she achieved with the Reds – including becoming the youngest player to captain the women’s team at the age of 20 in October 2021.

Asked for the biggest milestone in her career, she said: “I think becoming Liverpool’s youngest captain, playing over 100 games, and being the youngest player at Liverpool to do that. I think I’ve hit loads of milestones!”

Kearns is still a big Liverpool fan, although that does not extend to games against Villa.

She said: “It’s my club at heart. I’m a Liverpool fan at the end of the day, but I’m a Villa player now, so hopefully we get six points out of the two games that we play them!”

Kearns has won three caps for England since making her international debut last year and is targeting a regular spot in the Lionesses squad.

The footballer said: “That’s where I want to be consistently! It’s made me realise what I need to work on to be in the squad more consistently, and to give myself the best chance of getting in there!”
