Michael Carrick hailed “ruthless” Benjamin Sesko after his goal helped Manchester United beat Everton.
The striker netted after a rapid counter-attack to give the Red Devils a 1-0 victory in Monday’s (23.02.26) Premier League clash and United’s interim boss was pleased to see Sesko make such a big impact after coming on as a substitute.
Carrick said: “It was a great finish. It was a ruthless finish. I liked the way he put it away with real confidence. It was great play from [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo to set it up and we are dangerous on the break. I am delighted for Ben to come on and make a difference.”
Sesko is earning something of a super-sub reputation and Carrick lauded the Slovenia international’s attitude.
The coach said: “I get why everyone’s talking about it and making a bigger deal of it, but I’ve got a really good relationship with Ben.
“I’ve got no problem with Ben and he hasn’t got an issue. He obviously wants to play, but I can’t speak highly enough of how he’s been and the work he’s putting in and his attitude to come on and do what he’s done again.
“We’ve had some really good conversations and he’s in a really good place, and part of us is helping him take his steps in development and growing him as a player.
“Sometimes that’s little steps, sometimes that’s bigger steps and he’s taken some huge steps recently. That’s great to see.”
Carrick also praised the performance of United goalkeeper Senne Lammens – who stood tall to earn his side a clean sheet in the face of Everton pressure.
He said of the Belgian: “For me a goalkeeper has to be reliable, be trustworthy. Instead of creating chaos, you want him to take the chaos away and calm things down. I think Senne does that.”
