Matt Wallace thinks he’s “wiser and older” enough now to win a Major.

The 35-year-old golfer’s best performance was a tied third place at the 2019 US PGA and he thinks if he can “get back” into contention, he’s in a better position than ever to triumph.

He told Golf Monthly magazine: “I haven’t played The Masters in a while, maybe four years. So I need to get back there.

“I like the golf course and I feel that especially with the mini driver now, you can hit that on a lot of holes where you don’t have to hit a driver.

“To compete is different. I’m just wiser, I’m older, you know.

“That 3rd place was kind of back-door third place if you like; Brooks Koepka and DJ ran away with it, so we weren’t really in contention to win that one.

“But I felt like I was in contention a few times this year.

“At the US Open, I felt like if I’d had a decent weekend, I would have had a real sniff at it on the last few holes.”

Matt thinks he needs to be able to play his best golf on the final day of a tournament.

He said: “Ultimately, if you play great on a Sunday it feels way better than playing great on a Saturday and not doing it on a Sunday because you’ve maximised your week.

“I just haven’t played as well as I’ve wanted to on a Sunday at The Open, but I played well at the USA PGA and US Open this year.”
