Marc Albrighton admits that winning the Premier League “never crossed (his) mind”.
The former footballer was part of Leicester City’s famous 2016 league success and admits that he had never considered the prospect of winning a league medal during his career.
Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, Albrighton said: “People say it’s a dream to win the league, but I don’t even think it was for me.
“My childhood dream was to play in the Premier League – to get my hands on the trophy was something that had never even crossed my mind.”
Albrighton recalled how Leicester weren’t shy of showing off the trophy during their reign as champions.
The winger, who played in every match of the Foxes’ title-winning campaign, said: “For the next year, the trophy came everywhere with us – I never got bored of that.
“I’d always be saying to security, ‘Can we get it out?’
“We were on a plane to LA for pre-season that summer and David Beckham was coincidentally there, so we got the trophy and took some pictures with him!”
Albrighton had joined Leicester after being released by his boyhood club Aston Villa in 2014 and reflected on the club’s contrasting fortunes that season – as Villa were relegated after finishing bottom of the Premier League.
He said: “I’d left Villa to play football again – as it turned out, that season Villa finished bottom of the league. I wasn’t happy about that by any stretch, because I’m a Villa fan and so are my family – they were devastated for Villa, but ecstatic for me.
“It just felt as though someone had been looking down on me, that fate had worked its magic.”
Albrighton added: “Ten years on, still every single day, someone will speak to me about that title win or mention it in some way. You appreciate how big a moment it was.”
