Manchester United have gone “cold” on the prospect of signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.

That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has revealed where the Red Devils stand in their efforts to revamp their midfield this summer, following the recent departure of Casemiro.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained: “In the case of Tonali, the appreciation remains, but at this stage the deal is not considered advanced or particularly concrete. The overall cost of the operation, including both salary and transfer fee, is currently viewed as too high.

“As things stand today, Man Utd are relatively cold on the possibility of signing Tonali.”

The Italian midfielder has been linked with a move away from Newcastle for months, and it remains possible that he could still move to Manchester, on the blue side of the city, if Manchester City fail to land their number one transfer option, Elliot Anderson.

Romano explained: “Tonali could be an option for Manchester City, although their current focus is on Elliot Anderson. Anderson is also highly appreciated by Man Utd, who continue to monitor the situation.

“Tonali is attracting interest from several clubs. Arsenal have made enquiries in recent days and remain involved in the race.”

Tonali is widely recognised as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, and it remains distinctly possible that he could move clubs this summer, despite Newcastle demanding an enormous transfer fee for his services.

Romano said: “There is a possibility that more clubs could enter the competition for Tonali, making this a situation that could become very interesting over the coming weeks.”

Meanwhile, Alan Shearer – Newcastle’s all-time leading goal scorer – recently suggested that Tonali might move to Old Trafford if United fail to land Anderson.

Shearer told the Chronicle Live: “Tonali, on the going to Man Utd rumours, I guess it all depends on if Man Utd get Elliot Anderson.

“Elliot Anderson would be their number one target, both City and Man United, that wouldn’t be a surprise to me.”
