Luke Donald has admitted the Europe Ryder Cup team need a “different approach” this year.
The sportsman is hoping to be the first captain to win the tournament twice since 1987, but with this year’s competition being held in New York, he knows it won’t be easy as it has been 13 years since there was an away win.
He told Golf Monthly magazine: “The challenge is different.
“We had certain things to our advantage in Rome – having a little bit of control of the course, the support of the crowd.
“Those are disadvantages now, so you have to come with a different approach and a different thought process on how to handle that.
“The Americans will be very strong – we always know that – but I feel like we have the talent.
“From two years ago, we have a great feeling of what it takes to win and to create a great culture and atmosphere in that team.
“So we’ll definitely rely on certain things that worked really well in Rome, but there’s a different chat, a different talk to the players than I would have been talking to them about in Rome.”
Luke is great friends with US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and insisted their rivalry won’t impact on their relationship off the green.
Asked if their friendship has taken a twist, he said: “Not really. We still text each other.
“We’re not talking too much about the Ryder Cup.
“We’ll share a beer on Sunday night no matter what.”
