Liverpool have reportedly cooled their interest in Marc Guehi until the end of the season, despite coming close to signing the Crystal Palace captain in the summer.
The 25-year-old was on the brink of joining Liverpool during the last transfer window after both clubs agreed a fee and the defender reportedly underwent a medical.
But according to The Sun, the move collapsed on deadline day when Palace failed to secure a replacement, despite seeking to bring in Joe Gomez from Anfield as part of the deal.
Liverpool remain interested in Guehi but, according to The Times, will wait until the summer to pursue him, when his contract expires and he will be available as a free agent.
Reports suggest Barcelona and Real Madrid are also tracking the centre-back, which could present strong competition for his signature.
Guehi has built a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in 2021.
He came through the Chelsea academy and captained their youth teams, winning successive FA Youth Cups in 2016 and 2017 alongside the likes of Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Although he made just two senior appearances for Chelsea, Guehi gained valuable first-team experience during two loan spells at Swansea City between 2020 and 2021, helping the Welsh club reach the Championship play-off final.
His performances persuaded Palace to pay a reported £18 million to secure his services in July 2021.
Since then, Guehi has established himself as a key figure at Selhurst Park, earning the captain’s armband and becoming a regular starter in the England squad under Gareth Southgate.
He made his senior international debut against Switzerland in March 2022 and was selected for England’s Euro 2024 campaign in Germany, starting in defence as Southgate’s side reached the final.
Neither Guehi nor Crystal Palace have commented publicly on the collapse of his proposed move to Liverpool.
He is expected to lead the Eagles when they host Sunderland at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
