Liverpool may have smashed the Premier League transfer record twice in one summer, but the champions still finished behind Arsenal in the season’s spending tables.
Jürgen Klopp’s side laid out a staggering £426 million on new signings during the window, eclipsing every previous figure in club history, The Sun has calculated.
The headline deal came on deadline day on Tuesday (02.09.25) when Alexander Isak, 25, joined from Newcastle United for £130 million – the biggest fee in English football history.
his move surpassed Liverpool’s earlier record-breaking purchase of Florian Wirtz, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million including add-ons.
Alongside Isak and Wirtz, Liverpool also secured Hugo Ekitike for £69 million, Milos Kerkez (£40 million), Jeremie Frimpong, (£29.5 million), Giovanni Leoni (£26 million), Giorgi Mamardashvili (£30 million) and Armin Pecsi (£1.5 million.)
Despite the scale of investment, Liverpool offset their outlay with £205 million worth of sales, including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Jarell Quansah.
That left their net spend at £221m.
Arsenal, by contrast, invested £241.8 million in new players but recouped only £16.7 million from departures, leaving them with the league’s highest net spend of £225.1 million.
Mikel Arteta’s side allowed Kieran Tierney, Jorginho and Takehiro Tomiyasu to leave for free or by release – while Oleksandr Zinchenko and Reiss Nelson secured only loan exits.
Jakub Kiwior moved under an initial loan with an obligation to buy for £23.5 million – income that will appear in next season’s accounts.
Chelsea’s approach offered a stark contrast.
Todd Boehly’s club spent more than £260 million on signings but generated £280.7 million in sales, leaving a net profit of £17.7 million.
Outgoings included Christopher Nkunku to AC Milan for £36 million, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Everton for £26 million and Noni Madueke to Arsenal for £48 million.
Bournemouth topped the profit charts with a surplus of £92.8 million, thanks to the sales of Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, Dango Ouattara and Illia Zabarnyi.
Manchester United spent £215 million on signings but made back only £61.7 million.
They leaned heavily on loans, with Jadon Sancho joining Aston Villa temporarily and Marcus Rashford moving to Barcelona on a potential short-term deal.
Newcastle’s net spend stood at £84 million after banking £130 million from Isak’s sale.
Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, became the fourth-highest spenders by signing Xavi Simons in a £110.5 million move.
In total, Premier League clubs spent close to £3 billion over the summer window.
