Lee Sharpe believes his former Manchester United teammate Peter Schmeichel “changed the face” of goalkeeping.
The 54-year-old former footballer turned out for the Red Devils between 1988–1996 and he thinks there are fewer finer players between the sticks than the Dane, who joined the club in 1991.
Lee told FourFourTwo magazine: “He was a colossus and changed the face of goalkeeping.
“Peter had a presence, came for crosses, could start attacks rom his own penalty box and made massive saves in massive games.”
And Lee also singled out his former Leeds United teammate Ian Rush as another player who changed the game for his position.
Discussing his best ever teammates, he said: “I was torn between Rushie and Alan Shearer, but I know Rushie better from Leeds.
“A dirty finisher at times, he didn’t always catch shots flush, but knew where the net was.
“He was one of the best defensive centre-forwards in the game and changed that role – he’d nick the ball and turn defence into attack.”
Like many players of his era, Lee thinks there was no better manager than his United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
He said: “The most fun I had was under Graham Rix during a loan at Portsmouth, but Fergie was obviously the best and most successful, as well as the strictest.
“He could be brutal at times, but wanted to win at any cost.”
