Lee Carsley was never going to play it “safe” during his brief stint as interim England manager.
The under-21 boss stepped up as caretaker boss in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s departure and before Thomas Tuchel was formally appointed, and though the side lost 2-1 in his final game against Greece, he has no regrets about his decisions.
He told FourFourTwo magazine: “Looking back, I definitely wasn’t going to do the job and be safe.
“That’s not my style as a coach. We have to win, we have to attack, we have to dominate, and we have to play with control.
“Going back, would we have done anything different against Greece? Not a chance. I had to try it. I wanted to try it. I wanted to see it myself.
“I needed to know whether we could play differently and have a Plan B.
“You always look back at results and go, ‘Oh well, it didn’t work, so don’t ever do that again.’
“No, we have to try out different things.”
Lee insisted it was important to make changes in a bid to shake things up for England.
He added: “Do you want me to do what everyone else has done?
“Maybe getting to finals was seen as taking steps forward, and of course it was.
“But we still haven’t gone that last step, the biggest step – the winning bit.”
