Katie Zelem believes women’s football is “so much further along” in the US than the UK.

The former Manchester United midfielder joined Angel City last year and she admitted she was attracted to the Los Angeles side because of how “competitive” and popular the league is.

She told FourFourTwo magazine: “One of the main things that drew me here is how competitive this league is.

“I think the more diversity and more players we can attract here the better.

“One of the biggest things is the fans – there are up to 20,000 fans each week, and you can tell that women’s football is so much further along here.”

Although Katie was ready for a “change”, she hadn’t considered going to the US until Angel City made their approach.

She said: “It wasn’t really at the forefront of my mind – I live a small-town life!

“I’m from Manchester, my whole family is.

“We can walk to my dad’s family from the house I lived in, but I knew I wanted a change.

“I don’t know how to describe it but it’s when you just feel ready for something new.

“Angel City approached me quite early and I respected how patient they were.

“I had a lot of questions; the time difference is a big one, I had to think about that more than anything when it came to family, but the club were so patient and respectful, and how much class they had made me want to go.

“The club’s built a new training facility – there’s a lot of good happening here.”
