Jamie Carragher believes England only have an “outside chance” of winning the World Cup next year.
The Three Lions have already qualified for the tournament in North America but Carragher admits that Thomas Tuchel’s side are not amongst his top picks for glory.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher said: “You have to look at Argentina, the holders, will it be the last time we see (Lionel) Messi play football? They’ll probably have great support, especially if they play in Miami, with his impact on MLS and playing for Inter Miami.
“From the European side of things, the European champions, Spain with Lamine Yamal and then France with Kylian Mbappe, arguably the two best players in the world right now, alongside obviously Ousmane Dembele with France as well.
“I find it very difficult to ever look at a tournament and not have France at the back of my mind.”
The former Liverpool defender added: “(England are in) the next level of teams, alongside Portugal, those teams I’ve mentioned are probably the favourites and then they’ve got an outside chance.”
Carragher’s comments echo Tuchel’s words on the subject last month, where he suggested that England cannot be considered amongst the favourites because they haven’t won a tournament since 1966.
The manager said earlier this month: “We will arrive as underdogs in the World Cup because we haven’t won it for decades, and we will play against teams who have repeatedly won it during that time, so we need to arrive as a team otherwise we have no chance.
“If you’ve never won Wimbledon, you may be one of the favourites but you are not the favourite.
“You can go and if you come close, OK, you are within the pool, but you are not the favourite. It is just how it is.
“There is Brazil, there is Argentina, Spain, France and they just did it recently.”
