Fabio Capello fears that fatigue could hamper England’s chance of winning the World Cup this summer.
The former manager – who led the Three Lions at the World Cup in 2010 – believes that England are capable of triumphing in North America but is concerned that the demands of the Premier League could leave the players physically drained.
Speaking to Egyptian channel ON Sport, Capello said: “Tuchel took the national team to the World Cup without the players being exhausted.
“I know for a fact that when I was England manager, in September, October, and November, we could play against the strongest teams in the world without any problem.
“But in March and April, the player started to show signs of fatigue, and by June they are always very tired because the English league is extremely physically demanding.
“The psychological pressure there isn’t as great as in Spain or Italy from the press, but the fatigue in England is purely physical.”
Capello’s only major tournament with England ended with a comprehensive 4-1 loss to Germany in the last 16 of the South Africa World Cup, although he thinks matters could have been different had Frank Lampard’s shot that had crossed the line been awarded as a goal with the score at 2-1.
He said back in 2023: “Go back. I remember the goal of Lampard. I remember this because all the people who saw it know it was a goal, everybody knows it was a goal.
“With that goal it was 2-2. You have to know when you are recovering two goals after you are losing two goals this changes everything, we are improving. Who knows what happens then. But that is football.”
