Fabinhho thought Curtis Jones and Trent Alexander-Arnold were speaking German when he first joined Liverpool.

The 32-year-old Brazilian knew very little English when he first joined the Premier League side in 2018 and it took him a particularly long time to grasp the Scouse accent spoken by his teammates from the local area.

He told FourFourTwo magazine: “When I arrived, I knew practically no English, so I started studying.

“Shortly after I arrived, I overheard Curtis-Jones talking to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“When I asked the others, ‘What language are these guys speaking? Because that isn’t English’, they laughed.

“I would have guessed they were speaking German!

“But you get used to it and understand more as time goes by – it’s an accent as beautiful as it is difficult to understand.”

Fabinho found it “extremely helpful” to settle into a squad that included a number of other Brazilian players.

He said “I arrived at the same time as Alisson, but [Roberto] Firminho was already there, as well as Alberto Moreno, who’s Spanish but has spent so much time with Firminho, Lucas Leiva and Philippe Coutinho that he’d practically become Brazilian.

“It was important for me and my family to have their help.

“Roberto Firmino and his family are very special people who did everything they could to make you feel good and help you adapt. I’m sure Alisson feels the same way.”
