Derek Chisora has been praised for his “very nice heart”.
The controversial boxer is known for his unpredictable nature, but commentator Adam Smith has always appreciated the sportsman’s “sweet” side after Derek developed a strong bond with his mother.
Adam told Boxing News magazine: “He’s got different moods.
“He’s had a pop at me about commentary, but then he’ll come and give me a massive hug.
“He just says what he believes in.
“What I really like about him is the way he is about my mum.
“My mum used to come for a lot of boxing and he’d always look out for her.
“They had a special sort of bond and the first thing he always asks is, ‘How’s your mum?’
“That’s really sweet of him.
“I know he can be a bit prickly at times, and controversial, but he’s also got a very nice heart as well.
“He’s got a sweet side. I like the fact he’s a bit more mature and respectful now.”
And Adam believes Derek is always entertaining in the ring.
He added: “In the ring, always value for money. Become a bit of a cult character hasn’t he?
“He’s been a staple of the last 20 years and he’s still got momentum.
“He can be fantastic, can’t he, and despite the losses on his record, he’s always been in and amongst the best.
“Fought [Vitali] Klitschko, fought [Tyson] Fury three times, and always gives his best.
“So, plenty of memories of Derek. Funny ones, mad ones, crazy ones, often disgraceful, often sweet.”
