Dalton Smith has hailed his WBC title win a “surreal” moment.

The 28-year-old Yorkshireman took the WBC super-lightweight title with a fifth-round knock-out win over Subriel Matias in New York last month and he was thrilled to finally achieve something he’s worked towards for decades.

He told Boxing News magazine: “I’d worked for it since I was a young kid but to finally achieve it is a bit of a ‘pinch me’ moment.

“I always said I’d do it, but to be in that moment, to be crowned champion, it’s surreal, a feeling I’ve never felt before.”

But Dalton admitted he didn’t expect to claim victory so early in the fight.

He said: “It went according to plan.

“Matias comes with relentless pressure. I should have boxed for a few rounds.

“But we knew we was going to get into hard parts of the fight, we were going to meet him head-on sooner or later, and I felt comfortable in there to deal with what was in front of us.

“I was confident to stop him late on; I wasn’t expecting it to be as early as that.

“But I was just prepared for anything he was gonna throw at us.”
