Carlo Ancelotti says Brazil must master the “balance” between attack and defence if they are to win the World Cup.
The legendary Italian coach will attempt to win a record-extending sixth World Cup for the Selecao in North America this summer and says his team will need to be good in all areas of the pitch if they are to emulate the success of the past.
Ancelotti told World Soccer magazine: “It’s the key word, talent, because without talent you cannot win. But balance is also very important.
“The team has to be balanced between attack and defence. Brazil have won World Cups with a fantastic connection between talent and defence. History speaks very clearly.
“You need to have talent – and we have – and to defend well. There is no other way. Football is not so complicated.”
Ancelotti took over as Brazil boss last year and has been struck at how keen players are to represent the national team.
The former Real Madrid manager said: “The Brazilian player really wants to represent the national team. In a club it’s different – there are many different nationalities and languages. With the national team there is only one, and communication is easier.
“The relationship between the players is very good, and this is very important to help us achieve our objectives.”
Ancelotti has enjoyed a glittering career in club management but is looking to add to his World Cup experience with Brazil.
He said: “I’ve had three experiences with the World Cup. In 1986 and 1990 I was a player (with Italy), and in 1994 I was assistant coach.
“It was fantastic to prepare for big games when all the country is behind you, and my aim in this job is to have that kind of feeling again.”
The five-time Champions League winner added: “And before becoming a player, I was a fan.
“I remember how we were excited to be facing Brazil in the final of 1970 – but Brazil were so strong, and beat us 4-1, with Pele, Jairzinho, Gerson, Rivelino, Carlos Alberto. It was the first time that I realised how much talent Brazil has.”
