Ben Whittaker is to fight Benjamin Gavazi in his debut for Matchroom Boxing next month.
The Olympic silver medallist, 28, signed on to promoter Eddie Hearn’s company earlier this month, and Hearn has now announced Whittaker will face Gavazi, 30, on November 29 in Birmingham, England.
In a statement, Hearn said: “Ben Whittaker is the greatest signing any promoter in the world could have made and he levels up from the get-go in front of his home fans in Birmingham.”
The pair will clash for the the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) silver light-heavyweight title.
Whittaker – who is ranked ninth in the WBC’s light-heavyweight divison – most recently defeated Liam Cameron, 34, in April.
Meanwhile, Gavazi will fight outside of Germany for the second time in his career, having picked up 19 wins since he lost his debut bout in 2018.
When he joined Matchroom Boxing, Whittaker said he was “ready for the next step” in his career, and that he “truly felt like this is a fresh start” for him.
In a statement, he said: “Ben Whittaker and Matchroom Boxing? It sounds very good – it’s got a nice ring to it.
“Of course, I came very close to signing before. But I’m here now, and that’s the main thing.
“I think things happen for a reason. I’m at the right stage in my career now to pick the right platform and go for the right fights. So this move just made sense.
“I’ve only had 10 fights so far – and there have been a few ups and downs in those. But I’m lucky that the experience I have so far will take me far in my career.”
Hearn described Whittaker as “phenomenal”, and called the deal “the greatest signing to make in boxing today”.
He added: “Ben Whittaker is a generational talent and we are ready to take his career to a whole new level.
“This long-term deal will propel Ben to global superstardom, solidifying his reputation as a household name and steering him towards future world titles. He will be No.1. He has the world at his feet and I am beyond excited to finally be promoting this great, young man.”
