Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany doesn’t care if Harry Hane becomes the Bundesliga’s top goal-scorer.
The 32-year-old striker is closing in on Robert Lewandowski’s single-season Bundesliga goals record as Bayern Munich march towards another league title, but Kompany has insisted silverware, not statistics, is the priority.
Speaking after Kane scored twice in a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen to bring up his 500th career goal, Kompany said: “I assume that the league title is much more important for him than the record.
“But maybe I’m wrong because I was a defender, not a striker. He’s Harry Kane, he has and will always score goals.”
Kane’s brace took him to 26 Bundesliga goals with 12 matches remaining, putting him within striking distance of Lewandowski’s record of 41 league goals in a single campaign, set in 2020/21 when the Polish striker surpassed Gerd Müller’s long-standing mark.
Kompany, however, was unmoved by the prospect of history being rewritten.
The England captain has already proven his consistency in Germany.
He scored 36 league goals in his debut Bundesliga season and followed it up with 41 goals in all competitions as Bayern reclaimed the title last term.
This season, Bayern sit comfortably clear at the top and Kane’s all-round contribution has been as notable as his finishing.
Unlike Lewandowski – who operated primarily in the penalty area – Kane regularly drops deep, links play and creates chances.
He is also closing in on Lewandowski’s assist tally from that record-breaking campaign.
Kane previously said he thinks he is still at his peak.
He said: “I am 32 now, and sometimes you get to an age where people just assume you are going to start slowing down and assume it’s coming to an end.
“But I feel like I’m in the prime of my career.
“Even if I look at the running data from this season, I am running as much as I have ever run before, so it’s hard to say.
“I feel like I could play for many more years and I feel like I am right in the prime of what I want to do.”
