Aryna Sabalenka is adamant that her Battle of the Sexes clash with Nick Kyrgios will not be damaging for women’s sport.

The female world number one will take on former Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios in an exhibition match in Dubai later this month and has denied claims that the event could be detrimental for females in sport.

Sabalenka told BBC Sport: “I don’t agree.

“I am not putting myself at any risk. We’re there to have fun and bring great tennis. Whoever wins, wins.”

The four-time major champion added: “It’s so obvious that the man is biologically stronger than the woman, but it’s not about that.

“This event is only going to help bring women’s tennis to a higher level.”

The match is the brainchild of Sabalenka and Kyrgios’ agent Stuart Duguid, who has claimed that the players will “do fine” financially from the clash but has stressed that money is not the “driving” force behind the game.

Sabalenka added: “It’s not going to be an easy match for Nick.

“I’m going to be there competing and showing women are strong, powerful and good entertainment.

“He’s in a lose-lose situation. I’m in a win-win situation.”

Kyrgios claims that he has not given “a thought” to the prospect of becoming a poster boy for those wanting to criticise women’s sport should he come out on top against the Belarusian.

The Australian said: “This is the only thing I’m good at – hitting a ball over a net and giving people a show.

“So I can’t do anything other than hope me and Aryna play our best tennis and, at the end of the day, whoever wins, that our handshake afterwards solidifies the union between males and females in the tennis world.”

Kyrgios isn’t worried about losing face if he is beaten by Sabalenka.

He said: “I’m never worried. I know how I’ve responded with things in my life.

“This is all a bonus. I’ve lost tennis matches before, so it’s not really a big deal.”
